JOB DESCRIPTION
Reboot solves civic problems by working with change agents within governments, civil society, and philanthropies to achieve their social missions. With offices in New York and Abuja, we work at the intersections of open government, media development and international development to build healthier information ecosystems and accountable government.

Reboot is seeking two (2) researchers to help us gather field research for a project aimed at strengthening participatory budgeting processes around the globe. This is a full-time, short-term engagement (approximately 2 weeks, starting in mid August 2018) in and around Yaoundé, Cameroon. Researchers will complete an in-depth training to learn Reboot’s approach and methodologies (1 to 2 days). Over the course of the two-week research sprint (August 13 - 24, dates subject to change), the Local Researchers will collaborate closely with our team to conduct research through in-person interviews, focus group discussions, and analysis related to challenges faced by participatory budgeting implementers.

Ideal candidates are civically engaged and passionate about community engagement in Yaoundé, and familiar with local civil society networks and groups. In addition, an academic/professional background in communications (journalism, media, etc.) would be useful.

You have superb qualitative research skills, and are excited to apply these in order to support the goals of this project. You are able to understand and distill complex issues and communicate with diverse groups. One of your key strengths is your ability to build trust and discuss sensitive topics with ease and empathy.

Creativity, strong problem-solving skills, experience conducting ethnographic research, and strong documentation skills are all highly valued. Direct experience working in Yaoundé with government (at local levels) and residents of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds is preferred. Fluency in English and French is required; fluency in additional languages (Pidgin English, Ewondo, etc.) is an asset. Candidates must be available full time from August 13 - 24, 2018 (dates subject to change).

RESPONSIBILITIES
Researchers will be responsible for research execution and documentation for one project.

Specific responsibilities include:

Research Execution and Documentation

Conduct field research in and around Yaoundé over the course of 2 weeks (August 13 - 24, 2018 - dates subject to change). Note: This work will be completed 6/days a week, and long working hours are to be expected throughout the contract. A typical working day will consist of team meetings, multiple interviews and focus group discussions, documentation and synthesis activities
Digitally document field interviews and observations on a daily basis
Manage parts of research documentation and support documentation of final outputs
Provide in-field logistic support (i.e. arranging interviews, scheduling venues for focus groups discussions, etc.)
Research Synthesis

Participate in daily and weekly research synthesis sessions and support the research team in analyzing data to translate research findings into final products.

REQUIREMENTS
Ideal candidates have:

At least three years of relevant professional experience in qualitative research, public policy, community organizing, consulting, or media.
A university degree in a relevant field, such as anthropology, sociology, or journalism.
Demonstrated experience with qualitative research and analysis, and ideally ethnographic research.
Close ties to relevant local communities, such as open government, civic participation, civic technology or education networks and services.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French.
Computer proficiency (especially MS Office and Google apps) required.
Candidates must be located in Yaoundé or the surrounding area and be willing to live on-site with the project team for the duration of the contract.
